WHAT THEN SHALL WE
DO?
By Pastor Max
Solbrekken, D.D.
When
it appears that all hope is gone and we have lost our grip on a moral
society and when we have become overwhelmed by the struggle, it
is then that we win.
When
our natural forces are weak and the advance of evil is trying to
choke us, take heart my friend, it is then that we realize that we
cannot do it alone.
It
is only then, that we begin to cry out to our Heavenly Father for
help, direction and the Holy Spirit's intervention in our lives and
those of our fellowmen!
James
Denny, Scottish preacher and theologian, said: “If God has
really done something in Christ on which the salvation of God of
this world depends and if He has made it known, then it is a
Christian duty to be intolerant of everything which ignores, denies
or explains it away.
William
Booth, founder of the Salvation Army
had the word OTHERS painted on the
front of His pulpit. He wrote: “Not
Called! Did you say? 'Not heard the call',
I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him
bid you go and pull sinners out
of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart
of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help.
“Go
stand by the gates of Hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to
their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants
and masters to come there. Then, look Christ in the face – Whose
mercy you have professed to obey – and tell Him whether you will
join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to
publish His mercy to the world.”
John
Knox the
great Scottish preacher prayed: “O God, give me
Scotland or I die!” Knox
was imprisoned by the Roman Catholic church and spent 19 months as a
galley slave, but God brought him through it all. The
martyrdom of the saintly Protestant theologian, George
Wishart
turned Scotland from the papacy.
When
John Knox returned to his native land, he was able by the power of
God to break the shackles of that apostate religion. And by God's
grace it is still free! While in Europe,
I visited the John Knox House in Edinburgh,
Scotland. Emblazoned on the wall were these words by Thomas Randolph:
“I
assure
you, the voice of that one man is able in one hour to put more life
into us, than five hundred trumpets continually blustering in our
ears!”
JOHN
WESLEY SAVED ENGLAND!
The
life of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, is awe
inspiring. He and his Methodist Church is credited for saving England
from the same fate as France during the French Revolution. Wesley
said: “We
went forth to seek that which was lost, more eminently lost, to call
the most flagrant, hardened, most
desperate
sinners to repentance.
Did
any man ever pick out such places as these in order to find serious,
regular, well disposed people? till God by us said unto them, “Live.”
Wesley,
often called the Father of Modern Evangelism, himself sums up the
form of evangelism he so firmly advocated in his own words:
“This
love we believe to be the medicine of life, the never failing remedy
for all the evils of a disordered world, for all the miseries and
devices of men. Wherever this is, there are virtues and happiness
going hand in hand. There is humbleness of mind, gentleness, long
suffering, the whole image of God and at the same time a peace that
passeth all understanding and joy unspeakable and full of glory.
“This
religion we long to see established in the world, a religion of love,
and joy, and peace, having its seat in the inmost soul, but ever
showing itself by its fruits continually springing forth, not only in
all innocence
(for
love worketh no ill to his neighbour)
but
likewise in every kind of beneficence, spreading virtue and happiness
all around it. The plain religion now propagated is Love. And can you
oppose this without being an enemy to mankind?”
Owners
of ale-houses, and places of ill repute, robbed of customers who were
finding new meaning to life in Wesley' popular teachings, were
violent in their persecution of him and his wandering preachers.
Spurred on by country squires, who in many cases controlled their
church endowments, Wesley's fellow Anglican clergy were little
better. “Often
the behavior of attacking mobs could be traced directly to these
so-called “men of God.”
WESLEY
on this occasion, was met by a raging mob. He wrote:
“...A
drunken rabble came with clubs and staves in a tumultuous and riotous
manner...I had scarcely gone ten yards when a man...struck me with
his fist in the face with all his might. Quickly after that, another
threw his stick at my head. Another man, cursing and swearing in the
most shocking manner, cried out, “Bring him away.
For
three decades John Wesley was to know such treatment. When struck by
a stone he would wipe the blood from his face and continue preaching.
Church bells were rung to drown his voice, he was belted with stink
bombs, and on one occasion a man was even bribed to shout, “Fresh
salmon!” as a tasteful temptation for the congregation to desert
him.
WESLEY
writes: “Accordingly, at six I came and found such a congregation
as I believe Epworth never saw before. I stood near the east end of
the church upon my father's tombstone, and cried, 'The
Kingdom of Heaven is not meat or drink, but righteousness, and peace,
and joy in the Holy Ghost.'
His
missionary travels read like a guide book, the British Isles serving
as his parish. After 1747 he crossed the choppy Irish Sea forty-seven
times. John Wesley preached with the insight of a statesman,
believing that the ground he had won could be retained only
organization. In
1791, at the time of his death, there were more than a hundred
thousand Methodists.
As
America's President Woodrow Wilson noted many years afterwards: “The
Church was dead and Wesley awakened it; the poor were neglected and
Wesley sought them out; the gospel was shrunken into formulas and
Wesley flung it fresh upon the air once more in the speech of common
men.” -

HOLD
ONTO JESUS: RIDE OUT THE STORM!
A
Gospel song says: “Hold onto Jesus and Ride out the storm”.
By faith, see Jesus walking on
the water coming toward you. See Him speaking to you,
“Come and walk with Me on the water. Don't be
afraid. The wind and waves cannot conquor you when you keep your eyes
on Me!”
JESUS
said: “Come unto Me all ye who labour and are heavy laden and I
will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am
meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For
My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matt. 11: 28 -30);
“All
that the Father giveth shall come to Me; and him that cometh to Me I
will in no wise cast out.” (John 6: 37); “Behold, I stand at the
door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will
come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” (Rev. 3:
20)
What
is the answer to the worst dilemma confronting mankind? Jesus Christ
is the ANSWER. He is the Hope of the world, the only Saviour of
mankind and the Healer of Life's great problems. He alone is our
Peace, our Life and our Joy! There are four essential truths
that must not be diminished, downgraded or dismissed. They
are the Word of God, the Blood of Jesus Christ, the Holy
Spirit of God and the Name of Jesus Christ!
The
Word of God has power to free us from bondage, sin, fear and
sickness. The Bible says, "He hath sent His Word and
healed them, and delivered them from all their destructions."
(Psalms 107:20); “For the Word of God is quick (alive) and powerful
and sharper than any two-edged sword, even to the dividing asunder of
soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of
the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb.4: 12)
The
Blood of Jesus Christ is so powerful that it cleanses us from all our
sin and purges the conscience. The Bible says, "If we walk
in the Light as He is in the Light, we have fellowship one with
another and the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son cleanses us from all
sins." (1 John 1:7);
“Neither
by the blood of bulls and calves, but by His own blood, He entered in
once into the Holy Place , having obtained eternal redemption
for us. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of an
heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the
flesh. How much more shall the blood of Christ, Who
through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, PURGE
your conscience from dead work to serve the living God?” (Heb.9:
12-14)
The
Holy Spirit of God baptizes us into the Body of Christ at conversion
and as we totally surrender to God, He fills us with His presence (1
Cor. 12:13). The Bible says: "And be not drunk with wine,
wherein in excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (Eph. 5:18, 19)
“But
if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you,
He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal
bodies by His Spirit that liveth in you.
“Likewise
the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we
should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit Himself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He
that searcheth the hearts knoweth the mind of the Spirit, because He
maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
(Rom. 8: 11, 26, 27)
The
Name of Jesus Christ is the greatest weapon to drive Satan away
from us. Jesus said: "Go ye into all the world and preach
the Gospel unto every creature, He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved. He that believeth not shall be damned.
And these signs shall follow them that believe.
“In
My Name, shall they cast out devils...” (Mark
16:15-18); “And the seventy returned again with joy
saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through Thy Name,
And He said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from Heaven.
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and
over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt
you.” (Luke 10:17-20)
HAVE
WE FALLEN SO FAR?
What
can we do when leaders in the church have been deceived? When God's
Holy Word has been compromised, and enemies of the Cross are
dispensing conflicting messages to seeking souls? When carnal pastors
are preaching a watered down Gospel and giving false hope to the lost
and dying?
Commenting
on the political correctness, absurdities and backsliding that has
invaded the church, a concerned Christian asked, “Have we
fallen so far?” What have we done to the plain
Gospel message of the Cross of Christ, His glorious Resurrection and
the power of His Holy Spirit to change and transform lives? In the
last thirty years there has been a mega shift downward and True
Christianity that has been almost lost from our pulpits.
Some
time ago a friend of mine lost his wife. She had received Christ as
her Saviour and he also was born again. A Minister came to visit.
She said, “You will feel comfortable in our church. We
don't preach that old message of sin, the devil and Hell.”
He said, “I asked her why she was in the Ministry, if she no
longer preached the Bible.”
After
testifying to her, she left immediately! A man who was delivered from
alcohol lectured an ordained Minister on her duty to preach the
Gospel!
Dr.
Billy Graham made this powerful
statement: “Americans have gone a
long way down the wrong road.”
(Nov.7, 2012). In a very few words the living legend pointed his
index finger at our rotting society in the former Christian Western
world and the United States in particular. He was saying that the
train has left the station, heading down the wrong track and is grave
danger of a serious collision with certain death, unless it gets its
directions right!
According
to a CNN News Report on Friday 5, 1993, Pope John Paul 11 stated that
one does NOT have to give
up the practice of voodoo
to become a Christian. The Pope commented that the Catholic Church
believes that religious freedom is an inalienable right.
Speaking
at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on September 24, 2015, Pope
Francis made this false statement: “The
cross shows us a different way of measuring success. Ours is to plant
the seeds. God sees to the fruits of our labors. And if at times our
efforts and works seem to fail and not produce fruit, we need to
remember that we are followers of Jesus Christ and his life, humanly
speaking, ended in failure, the failure of the cross.”
Is
the POPE ignorant of the Scriptures
that prophesied Christ's death and resurrection hundreds of years
before his birth in Bethlehem? Christ's death on Golgotha was a
glorious Victory? Jesus was born to die! Did Jesus Christ fail? A
thousand time NO!
Jesus
said: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even
so must the Son of God be lifted up.” (John 3: 14): “But for us
also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on Him that raised
up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offenses,
and was raised again for our justification.” (Rom. 4: 24, 25)
DEVIL
IS REAL IN THE VATICAN!
The
Devil is lurking in the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church, the
Vatican's chief exorcist claimed on Wednesday. Sicilian
priest and long-time exorcist Father
Benigno
Palilla recently
told Vatican Radio that
requests
for exorcisms had tripled in the past few years.
There
were now, he said, 500,000 alleged cases of demonic possession
recorded in Italy each year.
With a population of around 60 million, this means the Devil is
apparently active in one of every 120 Italians.
That’s
a lot of demoniacs and a lot of demons – at least some 500,000 of
them if they’re not multi-tasking. As a result of this demonic
epidemic, a six-day school will be held in Rome in April at a
Catholic education institute, the Pontifical
Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum,
to train clergy in how to recognize and deal with the demonically
possessed.
Why
the sudden increase in possession by the Devil? Palilla attributes it
to an increase in practices that “open the door to the Devil” –
such as people seeking out wizards and fortune tellers, reading tarot
cards, and generally dabbling in magic and the occult. All this seems
rather odd coming out of a Vatican under the reign of the apparently
“modern” Pope Francis.
The
Devil is a real person,
“armed with dark powers”,
the pope declared in a television interview in December
2017.
Satan
gets more than a dozen mentions in the document as Francis talks
about how life can be “a
constant struggle against the devil, the prince of evil.”
The
Bible declares: “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy
Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that
were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.” (Acts10:38);
“...For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might
destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3: 8)
“Submit
yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will fee from
you.” (James 4: 7); “Be sobre, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion goeth about, seeking whom he
may devour. Whom resist steadfast in the faith...” (1 Peter 5: 8,9)
St.
Paul warned: “Neither
give place to the devil.”
(Eph. 4: 27); “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but
mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; casting down
imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the
knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ.” (2 Cor. 10: 4,5)
JESUS
CHRIST IS NOT NEGOTIABLE!
The
Gospel is Good News for Fallen Man. It is the Glad Tidings of the
great love, mercy and grace of God projected toward a sinful and
rebellious race! The Evangelical Dictionary of Theology
states: "The
Gospel is the joyous proclamation of God's activity in Christ on
behalf of man."
The
Gospel is the good news that Light has come into a world
of Darkness; that Peace has come into a world
of Turmoil; that Healing has come into a world
of Sickness; that that Love has come into a world
of Hate; that Forgiveness has come into a world
of Sin; that Life has come into a world of Death;
that Freedom has come into a world
of Bondage; that Slaves are made free by
the Liberator of the Human Race!
And
that Light, Peace, Healing, Love, Forgiveness, Life, Liberty, Freedom
and Eternal Life is none other than Jesus Christ the Son of God. That
He was crucified for us, rose from the dead and is sitting on the
Right hand of God as Saviour, Redeemer, Advocate, High Priest and
Intercessor!
The Western
Report, Feb. 8, 1993, regarding the story of Christian
Unity in Alberta stated: Edmonton’s
Dr. Max Solbrekken is more blunt: “We can’t sit at the same
table with people who presume to change the Word of God - call God
the Father ‘she,’ license homosexual acts, change Christ’s own
Words on marriage, or deny that He rose from the dead. That’s
blasphemy. The only truth that unites Christians is the person of
Jesus, and he is not negotiable. I’m all for Christians joining
together, but Christ is the living Word, not an ‘evolving idea,’
and he doesn’t change with the times.”
FROM
THE MANGER TO THE CROSS!
Christ's
vicarious death and glorious resurrection from the dead drives us
to repentance and faith, as we see His hand of mercy
extended to a lost, fearful and sick world.
The
Cross is the expression of God's love for us. It is the very pinnacle
of His mercy and grace to an enslaved people, bound by lust, greed,
pride and hate. The Cross of Christ has been referred to as the axis
of salvation, the climax of the cosmic battle between God and Satan,
between good and evil!
JESUS
said: "As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father:
and I lay down My life for the sheep. Therefore doth My Father love
Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.
"No
man taketh it from Me, but I lay it of Myself. I have power to lay it
down, and I have power to take it again. This command have I
received of My Father," (John 10: 15-18); "Greater
love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
friends." (John 15: 13)
The
Bible says: "For when we were
yet without strength (hopeless) in due time Christ died for
the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, yet
peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
"But
God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by
His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if, when we
were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much
more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life." (Rom.5:
8-10)
THE
SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD!
The
Sovereignty of God demanded punishment for sin and the Cross provided
the Final Solution! From the Gates of Eden - after the
Fall - until the death of Jesus of Nazareth on Golgotha, God
used the sacrificial system to forgive the sins of His people.
Innocent lambs, goats and bulls were sacrificed as substitutes for
sinning man!
When
JESUS cried, "It
is Finished",
Almighty God rent the veil in the Temple and left the Holy of Holies.
Standing on Golgotha's Hill, He laid His hands on the head of His
Son, transferring the sins of the entire world (past,
present and future) onto His Paschal Lamb.
The
Lamb of God had been sacrificed. He
had propitiated for our sins.
The Father was satisfied. The account was settled for time and
eternity! The fountain of blood was opened for sin and uncleanness.
His blood was flowing. JESUS had met the Demands of Divine Justice in
the courts of Heaven, in payment for all our sins!
"And
he (thief) said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when Thou comest into
Thy Kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee,
Today shalt thou be with Me in Paradise.
"And
the sun was darkened and the VEIL in the temple was rent in the
midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, He said,
Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit: and having thus said, He
gave up the ghost." (Luke 23: 42-46)
The
Great Exchange was done.
The sins of Adam that had been laid upon the human race had now been
transferred to God's incarnated Son. Our sins were imputed to Christ
and in exchange, His righteousness was imputed to us! (Rom.3:21-26;
4:6-8; 5:11-21)
The
Bible states: "But Christ being come an High Priest of good
things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made
with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the
blood of goats and calves, but by His Own Blood He entered
in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for
us.
"For
if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling
the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more
shall the blood of Christ Who through the Eternal Spirit offered
Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to
serve the Living God?" (Heb. 9: 11-14)
Speaking
to the pagan philosophers of Greece about Jesus Christ, St. Paul
stated: "For as much then that we are the offspring of God,
we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver,
or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this
ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere
to REPENT.
"Because
He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in
righteousness by that Man, Whom He hath ordained; whereof
He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from
the dead." (Acts 17: 30, 31
LIFE
THROUGH THE BLOOD!
ANDREW
MURRAY wrote: "Reconciliation and deliverance from Guilt
become the blessed entrance for us into a life in which the Blood, as
it was transported into Heaven and abides there will be truly the
power of divine abiding life in us." - The Blood
of the Cross
MARTIN
LUTHER stated: "First, the blood of Christ remains the same
blood of Christ. For we believe and hold that the blood of Christ
that is now at the Right Hand of God, was shed for us only Once."
- Church & Ministry, Luther's Works, vol. 40, p.
215
ST.
PAUL states: "But this Man, because He continueth ever,
hath an unchanging priesthood. Wherefore He is able to save them to
the uttermost that come unto God through Him, seeing He ever liveth
to make intercession for them.
"For
such an High Priest became us, Who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens: Who needeth
not daily, as those high priests to offer up sacrifice, first for his
own sins, and then for the people's; for this He did Once, when He
offered up Himself.
"For
the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity, but the word of
the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, Who is consecrated
forevermore." (Heb.7:24-28)
Clearly
stated, there is but ONE God and Father and ONE Lord Jesus Christ Who
is both Creator and Sustainer of the world and Sole Saviour and
Redeemer of the Human Race and ONE Blessed Holy Spirit of God, Who
draws all men to Christ!
All
other so-called gods and goddesses and deities are mere Counterfeits,
Imitators and Pretenders. It is Christ and Christ Alone Who saves,
heals, delivers and liberates from sin, fear, sickness, disease and
all the powers of Darkness and Satan!
"But
to us (Christians) there is but ONE God, the Father, of Whom are
all things, and we in Him, and ONE Lord Jesus Christ by Whom are all
things, and we by Him." (1 Cor.8: 6) Amen.
A
MESSENGER BOY FOR JESUS!
After
discussing the outstanding miracle healings that had occurred under
our ministry, the editor
of a major Norwegian newspaper asked, “Who is Max
Solbrekken?” I replied,
“The boy delivering telegrams does his job and gets back on his
bicycle, often without being thanked. The boy is not important but
the telegram is.
Max Solbrekken isn't important but the message
is very important. “I am just a messenger boy for
Jesus!” Next day's
Newspaper had a large picture of this preacher, and the article
covered a full page. The headline screamed, “Max
Solbrekken: A Messenger Boy For Jesus!”
For
more than 50 years, it has been my privilege to carry the Gospel of
Jesus Christ to multitudes across the world, the Lord working with me
and confirming His Word with miracles, sign and wonders!
From
1989 to 1995, I conducted major crusades across the former
Soviet Union.
In 2004 and 2005, by God's grace I ministered in four Ministers
Conventions with a total of 10,000 preachers in Brazil,
and in Parque Brasil in Paulinia, S.P. Brazil I preached to more than
300,000 people on April 13, 2005. Our latest Gospel Unity Crusade was
in Kampala,
Uganda in
2011.
One
of my greatest joys was preaching to Muslims in Darfur,
Sudan
in 2006, and Cairo
in 2007. To God be all the honour, praise and glory, through Jesus
Christ the Lord!
Theologian
James Denny wrote: “If
there is any truth in Scripture at all, this is true - that those who
stubbornly refuse to submit to the Gospel, and to love and obey
Jesus Christ incur at the Last Advent an infinite and
irreparable loss. They pass into a night on which no morning dawns.
The judgment of the Church is the instrument of God’s love, and the
moment it is accepted in the sinful soul it begins to work as a
redemptive force.”
