Norway's New Life Mission & Max Solbrekken Sponsored the El Salvador Crusade during Guerilla Attacks in 1986. God showed Forth His Great Power!
My Personal Experiences in San Salvador!
By Pastor Max Solbrekken, D.D.
Due to my close co-operation with the churches in Norway and many crusades across the world and because of the dire need for the genuine Gospel to be preached in Latin America we decided to enter the dangerous nation of El Salvador in 1986.
Gunnar Johansen and I were joined by some Americans and the local Full Gospel Churches. The crowds came as thousands of Christians and others attended the crusade and there were great altar calls and miracles of healing as God stretched forth His hand of power!
During the service one night three gunships hovered over the stadium and then headed north. In a short while we could hear the big guns going off. That evening as we were being brought to the Hotel, two vehicles passed us at a high speed. The one had to stop because of a wire fence and the driver was shot, and the second vehicle rushed from the scene.
A VERY INTERESTING MAN!
At that time I was writing a weekly column for the Edmonton Sun and needed to get one away to Edmonton. The authorites allowed me to use their equipment to transmit my article to the Edmonton Son.
I noticed a young man in the foyer speaking with someone on a pay phone. He was angry with his voice rising loudly. When I came into the foyer we spoke to one another.
He asked me who I was and what was I doing there. I explained that I was a columnist for the Edmonton Sun and that I wrote about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I asked him if had seen the activities at the stadium. He stated that he had, but was a Roman Catholic and not intersted. Then he warned, "Don't leave the city tomorrow. It could be dangerous."
The next morning Gunnar and I hired a taxi and he brought us to where the battle had been fought. A young soldier was sitting in a well fortified booth with a very powerful GUN that could span the entire valley below. He said that all had turned out well.
I asked him where the soldiers were located and he gave us specific directions. Our Taxi driver knew the area well and we zigzagged down to a much lower area where there was a very large natural enclave. There were hundreds of soldiers resting after a night of fighting. I gave them some tracts and prayed for them!
I MEET THE YOUNG AMERICAN AGAIN!
As I entered the lobby of the Hotel, the young man approached me with a dark look on his face. He was very direct. He said, "You left the City yesterday. You disregarded my advice." I answered him with these words, "Who are you?" He said, "Come up to my room and I'll tell you who I am."
I followed him to his room. He opened the door and I stepped inside. Then I heard the click of the door being locked and turned quickly toward him. Immediately the young man shoved a small black German Lugar up my nostril. I cammanded, "Lay that thing down!"
He laid it on the table and burst into tears. He said, "I'm a Mercenary and kill for money. I hate what I am doing. My wife doesn't know nor do my friends! I'm on contract with the Authorities. When I get the call to do something big, I have to go. I make $30,000 on each job. When a cell of terrorists have been located, we swoop in unexpectedly and kill them all. But I hate doing it!"
HE WAS CRYING LOUDLY!
He was crying and I threw my arms around him and said, "You need Jesus! You need Jesus! Ask him to forgive you and to come into your heart! He will save you and forgive you!" He said, "I'm a Catholic." I answered, "Ask Jesus to save you and He will." He said, "I could have killed you." I said, "No, you could not have killed me!" He answered, "Why?" I answered, "God would not have allowed you, because I am a man of God!"
I hugged him and we shook hands. Then he was gone! I kept him in my prayers for some time after that encounter! Amen.
